How to Re-enrol
To confirm your intention to continue in your course in 2012 all current students are required to log into the Student Portal at and
- Accept and submit the 2012 Enrolment Declaration, and
- Enrol in all subjects you intend to study in 2012 (or apply for a leave of absence for any period you do not wish to study)
You should enrol in ALL subjects you intend to study in 2012, including both semesters 1 and 2. Remember that you can only add new subjects to your enrolment up to the end of week 2 of semester 1 (Friday 9 March 2012). You can withdraw from standard semester 1 subjects up to the census date 31 March 2012 without incurring a financial liability or a fail grade.
Key dates for 2012 re-enrolment
- Timely re-enrolment period – Monday 24 October to Friday 18 November (5pm), 2011
- Late re-enrolment period – Saturday 19 November to Friday 2 December (5pm), 2011 (students that re-enrol in the late enrolment period will incur a $250 late re-enrolment fee).
Key changes to the Bachelor of Arts in 2012
Arts Foundation Subjects
From 2012, Interdisciplinary Foundation (IDF) subjects will be replaced in the Bachelor of Arts with Arts Foundation Subjects. You must have completed one IDF or one Arts Foundation subject to be eligible to graduate. The following six Arts Foundation subjects will be offered in 2012:
- MULT10014 Identity (semester 1)
- MULT10015 Language (semester 1)
- MULT10016 Reason (semester 1)
- MULT10018 Power (semester 1)
- MULT10017 Representation (semester 2)
- MULT10001 Aboriginalities (semester 2)
If you have not already completed an IDF subject, you are required to complete one Arts Foundation subject and are strongly encouraged to complete this subject in semester 1 2012. If you have completed one IDF subject prior to 2012 you will not be required to complete an additional Arts Foundation Subject. However if you intend to complete two non-language majors, you will need to complete either a second Arts Foundation subject or a Level 1 discipline subject in the second area of study.
Language Subjects
A number of language subjects will undergo title changes in 2012 as a result of a language curriculum reform undertaken by the Asia Institute and the School of Languages and Linguistics. The new language curriculum caters for the needs of a wide range of students from beginners and post-VCE students to native or near native speakers. Students can enter the sequence at different points, depending on their language proficiency. If you are a current student undertaking a language major you continue in the stream you commenced. We have provided translation tables for you to see how the subject title changes will affect your enrolment in 2012.
- Arabic Translation table (365kb pdf)
- Chinese Translation table (450kb pdf)
- French Translation table (350kb pdf)
- German Translation table (365kb pdf)
- Indonesian Translation table (380kb pdf)

How many subjects can I enrol in?
- A standard full-time load is 50 credit points (4 subjects) per semester. A load of 37.5 credit points (3 subjects) is also considered a full-time study load.
- You must be enrolled in at least one subject per semester throughout your degree (and your diploma, if applicable) or you will be cancelled from your course. You can apply for leave of absence from your diploma in the Student Portal if you want to focus on only your degree subjects for a semester. Taking leave of absence from your diploma will not affect your leave entitlement in your degree.
- You may apply to enrol in an additional subject (overload) normally to a maximum of 62.5 credit points, provided you have a good average (minimum 70%) and you have not failed a subject in the previous semester. Overloading is not possible at Year 1, and may not be used as a reason to apply for special consideration. To apply to overload, complete an online enrolment request, outlining the reasons for your request.
- If you wish to complete more than the required 300 points of subjects of the Bachelor of Arts, you can enrol in subjects via the Community Access Program.
- If you are in the final year of your Bachelor of Arts and you believe you need to complete an additional subject to meet the requirements of your course, book an appointment to see an Arts student advisor.
What if the Student Portal won't accept one of my subjects?
- If you find that the Student Portal does not allow you to enrol in one of your subjects, you may complete an online enrolment request. This service is available only to students enrolled in an Arts course (eg, B-Arts, D-Lang). Students who are enrolled in non-Arts courses who wish to enrol in Arts subjects as breadth should contact their home Student Centre.
- Please note that requests submitted in this way may take a week to process.
- This form must not be used to apply for intensive subjects that are due to commence within 10 days. If this is the case, you need to come in to the Student Centre and complete a manual request form.
- You CAN withdraw from subjects through the student portal. You need to exit the study plan screen, go back into the Admin tab, and select Withdraw/Drop subjects.
- We urge you to finalise your enrolment during the timely enrolment period to avoid late fines. You need to be fully enrolled in a subject to view and manage your timetable and access the Learning Management System.
What if I need the Subject Coordinator's approval to enrol in a subject?
- If one of your subjects requires special approval to enrol (eg, due to an enrolment quota, or if you have not met a subject pre-requisite) you must contact the Subject Coordinator and obtain their written permission to enrol in the subject. Subject coordinators in the Faculty of Arts can access an online form to approve the subject for you. Alternatively you can ask a Subject Coordinator to approve enrolment on the Subject Coordinator Approval Form (230kb Word doc) before submitting the form to the Arts Student Centre. Please note that final approval for all enrolment requests rests with the Arts Student Centre. Enrolments will be approved in line with the relevant University statutes, policies and procedures.
What if I need to take time away from my studies?
- Firstly complete the 2012 Enrolment Declaration in the Student Portal, then
- you can apply for Leave of Absence in the Student Portal under the heading Managing My Enrolment (Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework)
- If you only intend applying for leave for semester 1 2012, you are still be required to enrol in subjects for semester 2 2012.
- You can take a maximum of two semesters of Leave of Absence from your course.
