Faculty of Arts: Arts Student Centre My Advisor

Student Profiles

Ben Mountford

I had already completed a Bachelor of Arts and Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) elsewhere, but felt that Melbourne was the place to be to pursue a career in culture and the arts and to further my studies. As part of my studies I have also undertaken fieldwork in the Castlemaine, Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields. These classes have given me real-life experience of the careers in cultural heritage and conservation that are available to Arts graduates.

In my current work as an Information Officer in the Discovery Centre at the Melbourne Museum, I am constantly applying the skills I have developed through studying history to research and resolve public enquiries.

Donna Ambali

After completing my Arts degree and working full-time, I decided to return to study. I selected the Master of Public Policy and Management as I believe there is a tremendous opportunity to develop meaningful policies and effect real change from within government. My particular area of interest focuses on the design and analysis of transport and justice policy. The coursework program accommodates my working schedule and also offers some great internship opportunities.

The variety, range and quality of research resources available at the University is first class – especially the online resources which assist me in combining study with full-time employment.

Kirsty Waring

I have a passion for languages and a particular passion for Russian and other Slavic languages. I chose Russian because I spent a few summers in Crimea on archaeological excavations and met lots of fascinating Russian and Ukrainian people. I love the feeling that through my language and culture studies I am getting a tiny step closer to understanding the Russian psyche, language and culture.

After my Graduate Diploma I’m considering study in the field of cultural heritage management or perhaps language translation. Ultimately, I would like to pursue a career that combines archaeology and language translation.

Nicole Boldt

I returned to study after some time working in business. After completing my Bachelor of Arts and Honours year, I caught the research bug. Initially I enrolled in a Masters by Research, but my project became much bigger so I converted it into a PhD.

Pursuing my own research is exciting. I am working with archival documents from the 1930/40s, which have not been used for research before. I was the person who applied for these documents to be released to the public. This means that I am opening up an area of Australia’s public history that has not been explored in great detail. This is challenging but also a remarkably rewarding project.

The desire to contribute to the community and pursue one’s passions should always be at the forefront of any scholarly undertaking. My Masters in History and Philosophy of Science focuses on the philosophy of technology and the inter relationships between humans and non-humans. I am hoping to soon convert my Masters into a PhD. History and Philosophy of Science has a range of seminars and support programs including regular weekly seminars and academic support meetings for postgraduates.

Through my course I have developed skills in analysing situations, problem solving, organisation and independent intellectual activity that have been transferable to my personal and professional life. That my studies have direct relevance to my working life and the lives of my clients is a great feeling.

Siow Hui Mei

When I was in high school, I always wanted to further my studies at the university of Melbourne due to its high reputation and beautiful campus. When I began my undergraduate career, I was exposed to the full range of media and communication subjects, all of which reinforced and solidified my intense interest in the media field.

Apart from the academic accomplishment, I also had the chance to participate in extra-curricular activities. I joined the Melbourne university overseas student services and the Chinese Cultural society during my studies. I was appointed as the team leader of the Chinese Debating team and our team represented the university of Melbourne in the International varsity Debate Competition that was held on CCTV, Beijing.

Richard Misek, Great Britain

As an international student from Britain, I chose the University of Melbourne because of its international profile and proximity to the heart of Australian film culture. For many years I'd worked as a video editor and film-maker overseas and decided to undertake a PhD to develop my passion for film in new directions and to eventually shift into academia. The breadth of Melbourne's support for graduate students is, by international standards, exceptional.

With the support of the University's scholarships and research support schemes, I have just returned from a three month research and conference visit to Britain and the Netherlands, where I presented papers at four international conferences. Through Melbourne's international research profile and links with overseas institutions I have secured multiple conference acceptances and also gained leads for possible future publication.

Yuko Kitamura

I selected the University of Melbourne because of its international reputation in teaching and research. My particular interest in the Master of Development Studies is focused on development aid, development policy, gender issues and the reduction of poverty.

The Development Studies Program has a number of internships and fieldwork programs for students both locally and abroad. As part of my course I undertook a three-month internship with UNOPS (United National Office for Project Services). This was a great way to put the theory I had learnt into practice.
