The SUPERNOVA POP CULTURE EXPO is hosting the Imagineer's Playground Program

The SUPERNOVA POP CULTURE EXPO is hosting the Imagineer's Playground Program (main expo hall, Melbourne Showgrounds), which includes the Popular Arts Researchers Australia sessions. Academics from The University of Melbourne and Swinburne University of Technology have joined forces with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) to explore why superheroes have become such transcendent icons, and the place of comics in popular culture.

APRIL 16TH 2016, 3.30 - 4.20pm : Superhero Themes, Times, and Storytelling Techniques

In this panel:

  • Dan Golding (Swinburne University of Technology) opens this superpowered panel by chronicling the changing music of superhero movies
  • Naja Later (University of Melbourne) charts the subversive reshaping of Captain America in different political climates
  • Martyn Pedler (University of Melbourne) explores how motion lines and other comic techniques have been adapted to TV shows like The Flash
  • Chaired by Liam Burke (Swinburne University of Technology)

APRIL 17th 2016, 3.10 - 4pm - Phans, Fans, and Supervillains

  • Kevin Patrick (Monash University) celebrates The Phantom's 80th anniversary by exploring the character's history
  • Angela Ndalianis (The University of Melbourne) unmasks the changing demographics of superhero fandom, with a particular focus on female comics readership
  • Jason Bainbridge (Swinburne University of Technology) discovers what supervillains can tell us about the heroes
  • Chaired by Liam Burke (Swinburne University of Technology)

Over the 2 days, lead researchers Liam Burke and Angela Ndalianis will also be interviewing people about their relationship with superheroes culture as part of their research project "Superheroes and Me" (supported by the Australian Research Council).
