This exciting new study tour charts the phenomenal rise of new and emerging art and museum cultural development in the United Arab Emirates and State of Qatar. Led by museum and curatorial studies specialists Associate Professor Christopher Marshall and Dr Georgina Walker the tour will guide you on an insider’s journey of discovery taking in new museum and cultural developments in this rapidly expanding region from Doha to Sharjah and Dubai.
The tour is timed to coincide with the opening of the new Louvre Abu Dhabi, a landmark moment in the history of international museum ‘franchise’ redevelopments. Will the new Louvre Abu Dhabi replicate the so-called ‘Bilbao effect’ and usher in a new era of mass global tourism and cultural development to the region? Our tour group will be among the first groups of international visitors to see and judge the effectiveness of this new and exciting global museum initiative for themselves.
We will also be considering a number of other high profile museum development projects that underpin the region’s astonishingly rapid rate of development over the past 20 years. In addition, the timing of the tour will enable us to tap into the energy and dynamism surrounding the rise of the temporary contemporary art exhibition and art fairs in the region, such as Art Dubai, which will be running during our stay. Finally, the tour will grant participants special access to a number of recently formed private museums and foundations.
