Literature

Success in the Literature exam depends on strong skills in close reading and textual interpretation. Concentrating on eight of the most popular VCE Literature texts, participants will be able to select from a program consisting of lectures and tutorials delivered by leading academics and tutors. The lectures, specially designed for VCE students, will refer to specific passages and typical exam questions led by leading academics such as Professor Chris Wallace-Crabbe and Professor Deirdre Coleman. The small group tutorials will work intensively on practice passages and typical exam questions, building skills essential to the subject. On both days a session dedicated on successful examination strategies and techniques, delivered by Margot Thompson, an experienced VCE Literature teacher and examiner.

The selected texts were:
Novels: Persuasion, Jane Eyre, All the Pretty Horses
Poetry: Chris Wallace-Crabbe, New and Selected Poems and Rossetti
Plays: Antony and Cleopatra and A Doll’s House
Short Stories: Cate Kennedy and Gogol

Australian History

The Australian History Winter School program consists of a team of experts. Participants will be guided through the key themes of Australian history and receive specialist advice in what makes an excellent performance on the Australian History exam. Lectures covering Australian Units 3 and 4 will be geared towards deepening participants’ understanding of particular periods and issues in Australian history.

History: Revolutions

Success in the History: Revolutions exam depends on a robust understanding of the causes and outcomes of revolutions. The Winter School program begins with an exploration of the nature of revolutions with internationally acclaimed historian and VCE expert Professor Peter McPhee, followed by experience VCE examiner, Elizabeth Morgan. Students can also choose from individual lectures on each of the four revolutions, delivered by leading academics and teachers in the field. Each lecture concentrates on causes and outcomes, giving an indispensable overview and referring to past and typical exam questions and tasks.

Professional Study Day for Literature Teachers: Interpreting Texts

This year we are also offering a new professional study day for VCE Literature teachers for those keen to prepare key texts on the new 2018 syllabus.

We will explore and develop the different critical perspectives and theories required by the 'Interpreting Texts' component of VCE English Literature. Selected readings will be provided to help your students understand the various approaches. Our plan is to focus on a sample of each of the following genres - the novel, the play, and poetry - in a two-hour lecture and seminar format.

We will focus on the following texts:

  • North and South, Dr Grace Moore
  • Twelfth Night, Margot Thompson
  • Chris Wallace-Crabbe, New and Selected Poems, Professor David McCooey

The format will be a 45 minute lecture in which the lecturer develops at least two literary critical approaches to the text. This will be immediately followed by a seminar of 1 hour, 15 minutes, class sizes will be capped at 15. Before the study day there will be an online forum (Learning Management System) to enable registered participants to access sample scholarly articles exemplifying various literary critical approaches. These articles, plus the lecture, will form the basis for our seminar discussion.

Registrations can be for the whole day or for individual sessions.
