Information for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Applicants for the Bachelor of Arts (Extended)
The Bachelor of Arts (Extended) is a course for motivated and aspiring Indigenous students who have not obtained the results for direct entry into The University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Arts.

What is the difference between the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Arts (Extended)?
The Bachelor of Arts (Extended) is a four year Arts degree which
includes a year of bridging subjects to ensure success in the
most prestigious Arts degree in Australia. A major difference
between the University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Arts (Extended)
and other course, is that this program is residential - students
live in University Residential Colleges and benefit from all the
extra support that Colleges provide. Additional support services
are available for all students through Indigenous Student Programs.
What eligibility requirements are for the Bachelor of Arts (Extended)?
We are looking to recruit a national cohort of outstanding
Indigenous Australians. Students who receive a score of ‹50 are encouraged to apply. Eligible students will be
of Aboriginal or Torres Strait descent and have completed a VCE or
interstate equivalent.
How many Indigenous students are enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts (Extended)?
Twenty Indigenous students enrol each year. Because working
together as part of a group is important, there is only one intake
per year (Semester 1).
What does the first year look like? What units are in the foundation year?
The foundation year includes six bridging subjects that are
designed to assist you to adjust to University study and ensure that
your first year is as successful as possible. So students have the
opportunity to remain with their peers, Bachelor of Arts (Extended)
students take one regular Arts subject together each semester.
Once you have successfully completed your first year you can
choose your units dependent on your chosen career path.
Where do I live on campus when I am enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts (Extended)?
For the first years of the course all Bachelor of Arts (Extended) students live on campus in one of the following Colleges close to the University:
- Trinity
- Ormond
- Newman
- Whitley
- Queens
- Janet Clarke Hall
- St Mary's
- Medley Hall (Closed for renovations till July 2011)

What financial support is available?
If you are Abstudy eligible your college fees are fully paid through the residential cost option. For students who are not eligible to receive Abstudy, fully funded scholarships may be available. Your College will provide all meals and extensive academic, pastoral and social support.
Bachelor of Arts (Extended) students will be financially supported
during their study. Indigenous students are eligible for the
Melbourne Access Scholarship which is a $6000 annual allowance
paid in instalments, including $1000 upon enrolment to assist
with relocation fees/books etc. In addition, Indigenous students
are eligible for other scholarships. Details about scholarships can
be found on the University services website. In addition, bursaries are available for Indigenous
students through Indigenous Student Programs.
What units and areas of study are in the Bachelor of Arts?
There are over 30 disciplines to choose from including Australian
Indigenous studies, history, psychology, languages, criminology
and many more. Detailed information about areas of study can be found on the Bachelor of Arts website.
How and when do I apply for the Bachelor of Arts (Extended)?
Applications can be made through VTAC (Victorian Tertiary
Admissions centre). Applicants can submit a direct
application to the University, however, direct applications will only be considered after the VTAC offers have been made in mid January.
What happens next?
Applications will be assessed and all applicants will be contacted
individually.
Can I defer my offer?
You cannot defer your offer into the Bachelor of Arts (Extended).
You will need to submit an application by the due date for your
nominated year.

Applications for this program are made through VTAC with applicants also required to submit a supplementary application to the University of Melbourne. VTAC applications open on August 1 2011 and close on 11 November 2011.
