Overview
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) is a specialised year of study for students who have achieved academic excellence in their undergraduate degree. An Honours year enables you to extend your knowledge of your area of specialisation through higher level coursework subjects and an independent research thesis under the guidance of an academic supervisor.
Course Structure
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree consists of 100 points of study in subjects at Fourth Year level. The course is available only on a full time basis.
Pure Honours usually consists of a thesis of 37.5 points and 62.5 points of coursework.
Combined Honours usually consists of a thesis of 37.5 points, 25 points of coursework in the department in which the thesis is undertaken, and 37.5 points of coursework in the combined area of study.
Prerequisite Entry Standards
Eligibility to be considered for admission to the BA (Honours) requires completion of a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne, or a cognate undergraduate degree from another institution, completed within the last five years at the minimum designated standard outlined in the University Handbook. Further requirements must be met for each individual area of specialisation. Applicants with a non-cognate degree (eg, Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts) or B Sc with Grad Dip in Arts) may be eligible to apply for the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts. Quotas may be applied to the degree as a whole or to individual programs.

How To Apply
The method of application will depend on whether you are a local or an international applicant:
Local Applicants
You are a local applicant if you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident or the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa.
- Current University of Melbourne students may apply through the student portal. Within your student portal select the Admin tab.
- Non-University of Melbourne applicants should use this form to apply.
International Applicants
You are an international applicant if you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or are not an Australian permanent resident or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa.

Closing Dates
Applicants are advised to submit their application as early as possible. Applications may be submitted at any time.
- Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology applications will close on 31st October 2011.There is no mid-year intake.
- For all other Bachelor of Arts (Honours), applications will close on 31 May 2011 for entry in Semester 2, 2011, and on 30 November 2011 for entry in Semester 1, 2012.
Deferral
Applicants should note that deferral, part time study, and leave of absence are not available for Honours. You need to apply for entry to the semester intake in which you can commence and complete your studies on a full-time basis.
Transcripts and Supporting Documentation
Applicants in their final semester of study may lodge an online application attaching their available results, and submit their final transcript of results once it becomes available.
Results (either marks or GPA) for all undergraduate study must be provided, including subjects completed cross-institutionally or on exchange.
Thesis Proposal
Applicants for all specialisations except Psychology must prepare and submit a 300 word Honours thesis proposal (50kb Word doc) at the time of application. The proposal is not intended to be definitive, but rather a plan for discussion and moving forward. The proposal should be emailed to Arts-hons@unimelb.edu.au.
