HRAE Knowing Animals Reading Group: M.Harris 'The Cultural Ecology of India's Sacred Cattle' with Yamini Narayanan

Date: Monday, October 26, 2015 - 17:30 to 18:30

The article for discussion at our next reading group is: Marvin Harris - "The Cultural Ecology of India’s Sacred Cattle",Cultural Anthropology, 1966 and the session will be hosted by Yamini Narayanan, ARC DECRA Research Fellow, Deakin University

Marvin Harris's article remains one of the most controversial articles - jumping straight into the heart of India’s cattle politics: are cattle sacred or commodities? Originally appearing in Current Anthropology in 1966, the debate provoked by this article remains as relevant and highly charged today.

Yamini Narayanan will host the Reading Group discussion, drawing on her own research into this area, and bringing the debate into the present.
