H.B. Higgins Scholarship

The Honourable Henry Bournes Higgins K.C. master of Arts and bachelor of Laws and a member of the Council of the University on 25 October 1904 presented to the University funds of Victorian Government Stock for the purpose of founding in the University a scholarship for the study of poetry.

The Scholarship holder must during the tenure of the Scholarship undertake advanced studies with the aim of enhancing the study of poetry in any language. Such advanced studies may be taken in Australia or in other countries (please read trust regulation for further explanation).

 

Eligibility

The Scholarship is open to applicants who meet ALL of the following:

  1. University of Melbourne Bachelor of Arts (inc. B.A. Honours) who graduated in the period 2 March 2010 to 1 March 2012 OR
  2. Eligible students who are continuing their graduate studies in research or coursework at the University of Melbourne OR who are undertaking Honours (who have been conferred with a Bachelor of Arts) AND
  3. Eligible students who are of not more than two years' standing on the first day of March of the year in which the award is made.
  4. Open to local and international students enrolled at the University of Melbourne


The Scholarship is to be awarded in the first instance for a period not exceeding 12 months, but winning applicant can apply to the selection committee for a further extension not greater than 12 months. There is only one winner for this prize.

 

Applicants can only apply online for this scholarship.

You must supply the following documents to support your application and can upload these into the electronic application form:

  1. Proposal for advanced studies of poetry, (2 pages maximum)including:

    a) Name of project (if applicable) and Area of study
    b) Intended institution, and the date you intend to commence and finish your study
    c) If student intends to study overseas they must demonstrate contact and initial arrangements with overseas institution of study
    d) If travelling - dates of travel
  2. Current Academic Record or proof of completed B.A. at University of Melbourne and academic transcripts of all tertiary education to date
  3. Two (2) academic references
  4. Any other documents or information which may assist the Faculty in making its decision


The judges' decision will be final and the University reserves the right not to award the prize in the event it is considered that no work of sufficient merit has been submitted. Winning applicants please note the University of Melbourne reserves the right to publish the name of the winning applicant on its websites and other University of Melbourne publications.
