John Masefield Prize

John Masefield, Poet Laureate of England from 1930 until 1967, is the donor of this prize which opened for competition in 1949 and has been offered thereafter biennially to enrolled students at the University of Melbourne. Candidates must submit an original poem in English, of not more than fifty lines, on a subject prescribed by the Academic Board.

In 2010 the subject was 'Breadth'.

Note: This prize is awarded every two years on an EVEN year only and will be next offered in 2012.

 

Eligibility

The prize is open to students who meet ALL of the following criteria:

 

Applicants can only apply online for this scholarship.

Students must submit all documents at the same time electronically from their University allocated email address. If there are any documents missing they will be ineligible for the scholarship.

Applicants should include the following when applying:

  1. University allocated email address
  2. Student number
  3. Copy of an original poem in English, of not more than fifty lines, on the prescribed subject.


Applications must be submitted by closing date to the Academic Secretary.

The judges' decision will be final and the University reserves the right not to award the prize in the event it is considered that no work of sufficient merit has been submitted. Winning applicants please note the University of Melbourne reserves the right to publish the name of the winning applicant on its websites and other University of Melbourne publications.
