Scholarships by Nomination in Faculty of Arts


Faculty of Arts academic staff nominate eligible students for the following scholarships and prizes. No application is required.

The prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark for the nominated subject. If more than one student receives the highest mark, the prize is to be shared equally. See the AWCUM website for more information.
Asia Institute Australian-Asian Association of Victoria - Beginners Arabic UG No regulation Arabic $200 Students must be enrolled for a course of study at one of the Victoria's universities where Asian languages are taught. The course of study will normally be a full year course. The students must be a foreign speaker of the language for which the award is to be made, and it must not be their parents' language. The award is limited to first year students or students studying first year language studies at University level. The nominated student must have attained excellence in the language studies (i.e. 1st Class Honours, High Distinction or an equivalent grade in the view of their language teacher, professor or head of department or chairman of examiners, depending upon the assessment procedure adopted in each university). The students must have indicated a desire to pursue a major or further studies in the chosen language and have the intention of travelling to the country where the language is used.

School of Languages and Linguistics Professor AR Chisholm Memorial Prize in 4th Year French Hons UTR6.72 (84) French Net annual income of fund $175 in 2010 The prize is open for award annually to a student undertaking studies in the department of French in the Fourth Year of the course for the degree of bachelor of Arts with honours and is awarded on the recommendation of the examiners on the basis of excellence judged by the attainment of a grade which is the equivalent of first class honours for the thesis required to be submitted for assessment in that Year.
School of Languages and Linguistics WT Mollison Scholarship Hons UTR6.9 Modern Languages Available income of fund $14,311 in 2010 One or more scholarships are open for award annually amongst candidates at the final honours assessment in the modern languages taught in the University at the time of such assessment. Scholars must be aged between 17 and 25 years. If there are no suitable candidates within that age range, candidates up to 40 years old will also be considered. Each scholar must study in an appropriate country for 6 to 12 months within three years of the award of the scholarship.

School of Languages and Linguistics Omero Schiassi Prize Mollison winner studying Italian UTR6.72 (81) Italian Net annual income of fund $925 in 2010 This award is an additional award to the W.T. Mollison Scholarship and shall be made to any student who is undertaking language studies in Italian and is awarded the W.T. Mollison Scholarship.
School of Languages and Linguistics The Terry Quinn Award for Applied Linguistics PG N/A Linguistics $200 To be awarded annually to the student in any given year:
  1. who has completed a Masters in Applied Linguistics minor thesis; and
  2. has received the highest mark for the minor thesis of all students completing the Masters in Applied Linguistics minor thesis in that year.
If there are 2 students who receive the same mark and this mark is the highest mark then the prize must be divided between the 2 students.

 

School of Historical and Philosophical Studies Brenda Judge Prize for Second/Third Year Philosophy UG UTR6.72 (134) Philosophy The value of each prize will be half the net annual income of the fund $301.50 for each prize in 2010 There are two prizes awarded annually by the Council on the recommendation of a selection committee ('the committee') to the two students who submit for assessment the best piece of written work in a Second or Third Year Philosophy subject.
