LAL Seminar: Karen Parker
Join Karen Parker for a seminar: The Ritual Language of Nupa Amaibi
The Nupa Amaibi, a gender-diverse community of priestesses in the ancient Sanamahi tradition of Manipur, North East India, are the only remaining speakers of Lailol, the archaic form of Meitei. This seminar will introduce the community, based on recent fieldwork, with a specific focus on systems of sex-differentiation and will also endeavour to introduce a new concept to linguistics: gender identity differentiation. Sexual symbolism encoded in a key Amaibi ritual text will also be discussed.
