European Writers and Gender in Transnational Context.Dutton, Jacqueline. "Marcelle Tinayre and the Dawn of Turkish Feminism: Motes d'une voyageuse en Turquie (1910)," in Other Encounters: European Writers and Gender in Transnational Context. Rohrig Universitatsverlag, 2014, pp. 145-175.

The nationalist projects of the long nineteenth century in Europe sought to define and contain the national self by positing concepts of national character and incommensurable national difference. Scholarship on European nationalisms has shown that national identity is inherently gendered, as can be seen from the gendered division of the public and private spheres, the exclusion of women from nation-building projects, the gendered politics of culture and from gendered allegories of the nation itself... This collection of essays, spanning the long nineteenth century from the revolutionary late-eighteenth century to the pre-WWI period in the twentieth century, explores the varied ways in which the transnational encounter contributed to or contested the gendered paradigm of nineteenth-century nationalisms. The French in the South Seas. University of Adelaide Press, 2013, pp. 245-282Dutton, Jacqueline. "Imperial eyes on the pacific prize: French visions of a perfect penal colony in the South Seas," in West-Sooby, John (ed.,). Discovery and Empire: The French in the South Seas. University of Adelaide Press, 2013, pp. 245-282.

The French connection with the South Seas stretches back at least as far as the voyage of Binot Paulmier de Gonneville (1503-1505), who believed he had discovered the fabled great south land after being blown off course during a storm near the Cape of Good Hope. The story of his voyage remained largely forgotten for over 150 years, but eventually resurfaced in 1664 thanks to the publication by the Abbe Jean Paulmier of a document in which he argued, on the basis of this supposed discovery, for the establishment of a Christian mission in this "third part" of the world. While historians today contest the authenticity of various aspects of the Abbe Paulmier's Memoires, there is no doubt about the impact it had in France, both on the collective imagination and, more concretely, on French plans for exploration and colonial expansion. La "maison-musee" dans le roman et la societe de la seconde moitie du dix-neuvieme siècle," in Polyuha, M., Thomson, C. and Wall, A. (eds.,). Dialogue with Bakhtinian Theory. Mestengo Press, 2012, pp. 367-379.Bourgeois, Bertrand. Dialogue with Bakhtinian Theory. Mestengo Press, 2012, pp. 367-379.

Readers of our volume will find four overarching themes, which, we hope, give our collection a certain degree of internalcoherence. In Part One, the general focus is on novelization and autobiography, in the context of studies dealing with international authors such as Fyodor Sologub, Lojze Kovačič, Raymond Federman, Amitav Ghosh, and Félix Couchoro. These particular prose writers have not previously been examined in light of Bakhtinian theory. More information...

Dutton, Jacqueline. "Le Clézio, le prix Nobel et les paradoxes de l'utopie," in Moser K. and Thibault, B. (eds.,). J.M.G. Le Clezio dans la foret des paradoxes. L'Harmattan, 2012Dutton, Jacqueline. "Le Clézio, le prix Nobel et les paradoxes de l'utopie," in Moser, K. and Thibault, B. (eds.,). J.M.G. Le Clezio dans la foret des paradoxes. L'Harmattan, 2012.

More information...
