* Required scores must be achieved from a single test report, even if you have sat for multiple Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International Language Testing System (IELTS) tests.

University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program (UMELBP)

Applicants to the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHSS) or Melbourne School of Government (MSoG) who achieve an IELTS score of 6.0 (no band less than 5.5) or TOEFL and Pearson Test of English (Academic) equivalent score may be eligible for the UMELBP, which provides a direct English language pathway from Hawthorn-Melbourne to specific courses at the University of Melbourne. This 10-week program recreates authentic academic activities aimed at developing English language and study skills. Compulsory subjects for Diagnostic English Language Assessment (DELA) students

The DELA is a diagnostic test that indicates your individual strengths and weaknesses and the steps you can take to improve them. Sitting the DELA is compulsory for graduate students who enter through the University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program (UMELBP) offered by Hawthorn English Language Centre. Sitting the DELA is also compulsory for graduate students who have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (or equivalent).  The following subject is available for students on the basis of their DELA results:

  • LING90002 Presenting Academic Discourse is now a compulsory subject in GSHSS or MSoG coursework programs for students who have taken the DELA test as per University requirements and received a score of 4 or less
  • LING90002 Presenting Academic Discourse with a minimum score of 75% (H2A) is a hurdle requirement for entry into the Minor Thesis for students who have taken the DELA test as per University requirements and received a score of less than 6
