  • Graduate Coursework Colloquium

    Date: Saturday 9 April, 2016

    The Graduate Coursework Colloquium is designed to showcase the work and interests of graduate students in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Melbourne School of Government. It brings students together from across the Faculty's 18 graduate programs for a day of collaboration and inspiration. You'll also get to hear from featured Alumni speakers during the keynote panel discussion. The theme for the 2016 Colloquium is Create - Relate - Experience.

  • Graduate Community Mentoring

    The Graduate Community Mentoring program is a chance for graduate students to drop in and chat to students in the know. Our trained mentors are able to help with everything from advice on completing your assessment on time to (opinions upon!) where the best coffee on campus is made. Mentors come from a range of graduate coursework programs in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Melbourne School of Government. Drop-in Graduate Community Mentoring is held in the Reading Room and Student Seminar Room (rooms 219 and 220) upstairs in Old Arts (Building 149).

    Drop-in mentoring sessions are currently scheduled for the following dates and times (there is no need to RSVP):

    • Wednesday 16 March 1 - 4pm
    • Wednesday 13 April, 2 - 4pm
    • Wednesday 4 May, 2 - 4pm

  • Community Ambassador Program

    The Faculty of Arts Graduate Ambassador Program is open to Masters by Coursework students who are interested in sharing their experiences and providing leadership to prospective and current students and representing the Faculty of Arts.

    The program is designed to assist the Faculty of Arts in promoting its programs and in building strong student and alumni communities. The Ambassadors will be a group of dedicated current students, with a passion for their program. Current graduate coursework students may apply to participate in one of two Graduate Ambassador Streams: External Relations or Current Students.

    Please note: Applications close at 11.59pm Sunday 19 June 2016.

  • Research Tools Speed Dating

    Do you ever feel like the right research tool is out there, but you haven't met yet? Are you just not sure where to start looking? Research Tools Speed Dating is an event that allows you to encounter a number of different research tools and to sign up for further training should you wish. Research Tools Speed Dating is brought to you collaboratively by the Faculty of Arts and ITS Research Platforms.

    The next Research Tools Speed Dating is scheduled to take place on Thursday 4 August 2016 from 1 - 3pm in Arts Hall, Old Arts (Building 149).

  • Academic Skills Intensives

    Twice a year, Academic Skills run an intensive Saturday workshop for coursework students in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Melbourne School of Government. This intensive day-long program offers new students an introduction to academic expectations for graduate coursework students, and is also a study skills refresher for those part way through their studies. The program includes modules on study skills for graduate students, effective reading strategies, critical thinking, postgraduate writing and library research skills.

  • Diploma in Languages

    If you want to make language a feature of your study you can undertake a Diploma of Languages concurrently with your Masters degree. On completion of the Diploma you will have acquired a mastery of the oral, writing and reading skills and have gained a basic understanding of selected aspects of the culture and society associated with the language.   • Arts Graduate Academic Language Program

    The Arts Graduate Academic Language Program takes place over 8 weeks and is designed to develop your academic English and study skills, with a focus on advanced writing and speaking skills. It is of particular relevance to students for whom English is a second language. There is no cost associated with this program.Students enrolled in this program will develop their skills in:

    • time management
    • effective, critical reading
    • active listening and note-taking in lectures
    • writing for specific genres, including research essays, literature reviews, workplace texts and reflective writing
    • peer editing
    • building academic vocabulary
    • tutorial participation
    • group-work

    Expressions of interest for this competitive entry program have closed for Semester One, 2016. Expressions of interest for the Semester Two program will open in July 2016.

  • Speech-Making Training

    Run twice a year, this program introduces you to the fundamentals of stylistic, persuasive, powerful speechwriting and public speaking delivery. Facilitated by speechmaking author and expert Dennis Glover. Attend this program to augment your presentation skills and learn the art of sophisticated argument formation.

    This program will be offered next in May 2016. Further details and the registration form will be available here from April 2016.

  • Job Search Intensives

    Four times a year, the Melbourne Career Centre collaborates with the Faculty of Arts in order to deliver two-day job search intensives for students nearing the end of their degrees.

    The program covers:

    • Job seeking strategies, including how to use the hidden job market
    • Networking for information, contacts and opportunities
    • Preparing job applications including resumes, cover letters and selection criteria documents
    • 'Creating an online presence' using LinkedIn and other online platforms
    • Preparing for interviews, including a practice session
    • As numbers are limited, please book only if you are committed to attending

  • Wellness Day

    Student Wellness Week takes place across campus in August each year. As part of Wellness Week, the Faculty of Arts turns Arts Hall, Old Arts into a wellness space for one day. Come along and relax on a beanbag; participate in guided meditation, yoga, or dancing; and learn about wellness resources available across The University of Melbourne.

  • End of Year Celebration

    As the year draws to a close the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Melbourne School of Government throw a community event to celebrate and reflect upon the achievements of the year.

    This event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 25 October 2016 from 4 - 5pm in Arts Hall, Old Arts (Building 149). Further details and the registration form will be available here from September 2016.
