In a world of Facebook ads, fake news, Cambridge Analytica and privacy breaches, marketers and communications specialists are working in a climate of distrust. So, is ethical marketing possible in the industry as it currently exists, and what does social responsibility look like for brands that are struggling to have their message heard?
We’re hosting an industry panel to explore those issues through the lens of our Master of Marketing Communications and Master of Global Media Communication courses. Our experts have a background in either program and work across media, government and for leading brands.
Dr Juliet Fox, Projects Coordinator

Dr Juliet Fox is a community media coordinator and researcher with over 25 years experience in community broadcasting. She has worked in Australia and overseas in radio production and community radio facilitation, and is currently a staff member at 3CR Community Radio. Juliet is also a Teaching Associate in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne and a Community Broadcasting Foundation Board member. She recently published a version of her PhD under the title Community Radio’s Amplification of Communication for Social Change (Palgrave Macmillan 2019).
Joyce Cheng, Journalist

Joyce studied a Master of Marketing Communications at the School of Culture and Communication. Before enrolling into the program, she worked as a freelance writer for several arts and culture magazines in China. She also has experience working in marketing departments for nonprofit organisations in Australia. During her study at the University, she confirmed her passion in engaging with social issues by exploring the stories and experiences of real humans. She now works as a journalist for SBS Australia.
Marnie Carroll, Head of Communications

Marnie Carroll is Head of Corporate Communications for L’Oréal Australia. In her role, she is responsible for both internal and external communications for the L’Oréal Australia Group which compromises 30 brands. Marnie is passionate about translating business strategy in ways that are engaging for both employees and external stakeholders, and ensuring communication continues to connect people and build trust. Marnie’s experience in Communications spans the beauty industry, financial services and the notforprofit sector, working in both Australia and the UK.
Olga Klepova, Executive Producer
Content and communications professional, Olga Klepova arrived to Australia 7 years ago taking up a big challenge: build a new life and explore farreaching opportunities. During that time, she has been an author at Forbes magazine, a volunteer for Amnesty International, an intern at the ABC and a producer at SBS Radio. In 2017 she graduated from Melbourne University with Master of Marketing Communications. Since then she has launched a commercial podcast, has worked on the coverage of the major sport events FIFA World Cup 2018, Australian Open 2018 and redesigned content and communications strategies for multiple projects.

She has over 4 years of handson experience in building brand reputation and experimenting with marketing strategies in the eCommerce space. She is also an untiring advocate for personal branding.

Suneel Jethani is a University of Melbourne Alumni who has held senior marketing, communications, and business development roles in the medical publishing and science communications industry. Suneel currently working in the Department of Premier and Cabinet, a central coordinating agency within the Victorian State Government where he works on matters relating to data sharing, literacy, and ethics. Suneel is a lecturer and researcher in the media and communications program at the University of Melbourne.
