Heat and Dust - Artists, Archives, Art History

  • SYMPOSIUM

With the recent creation of the National Art Archives at the Art Gallery of NSW, the concept and reality of artists archives in the twenty-first century has become the focus of increased debate. This forthcoming two-day symposium, Heat and Dust - Artists, Archives, Art History, to be held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the University of Sydney, will address a range of questions, including:

How are artists' archives compiled, preserved and used? What is special, or especially difficult, about artists’ archives? Where are archives currently kept? And best kept? What happens to archives that are particularly problematic, ethically or practically? What are the particular conditions, benefits and challenges of maintaining Indigenous Australian art archives and archival practices? What can we learn from best practices in Asia and Europe? These and other issues will be explored over two days, in a symposium organised by the Art Gallery of NSW, the Australian Institute of Art History and the Power Institute at the University of Sydney. The venue for Day One is the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and Day Two is held at the Power Institute at the University of Sydney.
