Treaty in the city

Aboriginal Victoria, Treaty Engagement Grant: Treaty in the City, 2018-20

Co-designed with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Corporation

ISRC researchers Sarah Maddison and Julia Hurst

Treaty in the City was a research-driven project that sought to develop deeper understanding of what treaty could mean for urban-based First Nations, and specifically for the Wurundjeri community. Research for this project involved the filming of Treaty Circles, interviews and other discussions with Wurundjeri over the period of August 2018 to May 2019, and produced a short film, ‘Wurundjeri Talking Treaty’ (which is now being used by Wurundjeri as an advocacy tool to advance further conversations around treaty), along with two publications written with a Wurundjeri co-researcher. There have also been a number of public events based around this project. Work on this project highlighted the need for treaty education, and a major undertaking in 2021 has been the development of a new Professional Certificate in Treaty, which includes four Melbourne Microcerts.
