Walkley Award for CAJ Director

Centre for Advancing Journalism Director Dr Margaret Simons has been recognised at the Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism.

Dr Simons and Photojournalist Dave Tacon received the Social Equity Journalism Walkley Award for their story 'Fallen Angels: the children left behind by Australian sex tourists', originally published in The Monthly.

The social equity journalism category recognises "the vital role of public service journalism and media reporting which addresses issues relating to social and economic equality, human rights and participatory democracy".

In their comments on Simons' work, the Walkley judges said that the story was "exquisitely written". "Exposing an issue many Australians are unaware of," they said, "the story reveals significant failures by both the Australian and Filipino authorities."
