Nikos Papastergiadis and Russell Goulbourne

Episode 6: Nikos Papastergiadis and Russell Goulbourne

Place, culture, and diaspora in modern Melbourne

Do terms like ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘cosmopolitanism’ adequately capture the richness, creativity and vibrancy of a city like Melbourne? In this Dean’s Forum conversation, Professor Russell Goulbourne and Professor Nikos Papastergiadis interrogate these ideas in an effort to better understand how they’ve shaped our society, locally and nationally.

Taking Melbourne’s Greek community as an important case study, they discuss how this community has navigated their need to remain connected to heritage while also looking forward, and continuing to play a crucial role in the making of Australia’s multicultural identity.

The Hellenic Chair in Global Diasporas is supported by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Skills and Employment. The Faculty of Arts also acknowledges the contribution to this project of the Greek Community of Melbourne and its President Bill Papastergiadis OAM.
