Screening Ideas is a research communication and community engagement program organised around free public film screenings tied to lectures, talks and panel discussions. Produced in partnership with interdisciplinary researchers from the University of Melbourne and beyond, each event presents research on the most pressing issues facing the world through the accessible and engaging medium of film.

Duncan Caillard

Dr Duncan Caillard

Dr Duncan Caillard is a teaching associate and early career researcher at the University of Melbourne. His research investigates transnational art cinema in the Asia-Pacific, concentrating on works of anti-authoritarian and decolonial art practice in Thailand and Hawai’i. He holds a PhD in Screen and Cultural Studies from the University of Melbourne, where his dissertation analysed formal emptiness and contemplation in the screen works of Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. He is a coordinator of the Screening Ideas program, the vice-president of Senses of Cinema.

Cristóbal Escobar

Dr Cristóbal Escobar

Dr Cristóbal Escobar is a teaching associate at the University of Melbourne and a coordinator of the Screening Ideas program. His research interests centre on film-philosophy, modernism, and Latin American cinemas. He is the author of The Intensive-Image in Deleuze’s Film-Philosophy (Edinburgh University Press, forthcoming) and has published in various international journals on film theory, ethnographic filmmaking, and global art cinema. Dr Escobar is also a film programmer for the Festival Internacional de Documentales de Santiago (FIDOCS).

Corey Cribb

Corey Cribb

Corey Cribb is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne whose research re-evaluates the question of ontology in contemporary film theory and film-philosophy. His latest publication ““To Believe in an Image (Again)”: The Politics of the Index, André Bazin’s Ontology of Sense, and the Antidote to Digital Skepticism” can be found in Volume 17, issue 3 of Cultural Politics.

Pinar Fontini

Pınar Fontini

Pınar Fontini is a feminist scholar and an award-winning director. She works at the intersection of Middle Eastern cinema and feminist film studies. She is a teaching fellow at the University of Melbourne where she works on her doctoral thesis that theorizes women's cinema in contemporary Turkey. Fontini is the producer and director of the movies Dream Workers (2021) and What's the Name of the Film? (2022).
