About the 110 Scholarship

We want to ensure that as many students as possible are able to access a high quality Arts education at the University. We want to nurture a new generation of thinkers and leaders through The Faculty of Arts and we are committed to increasing access and equity and assisting students who may struggle to find the means to come to the University. While we do all we can to support our students, funding is limited and cannot always stretch to the provision of scholarships for all who deserve support.

It is for this very reason that we have established The Faculty of Arts 110 Scholarship Fund to increase community support for those students who have demonstrated the skill and creative acumen to excel, but who struggle to afford a university education or are hampered by circumstances beyond their control. The Faculty of Arts 110 Scholarship Fund will facilitate and promote access and equity for students enrolled or enrolling in The Faculty of Arts, and provide support for undergraduates and graduates who struggle financially, have relocated from rural areas and/or are Indigenous Australians.

2013 marked the 110th anniversary of the Faculty of Arts, providing us with a moment to reflect on how we have nurtured the intellectual and creative life of students as well as the community at large for more than a century. The '110' Scholarship was created as part of the celebration of our history with a vision towards our future.

The Bachelor of Arts was the first degree offered at the University in 1855, but it was not until 1902 that Council accepted a proposal for the establishment of a distinct faculty, with Arts granted its own administrative form and powers to commence in 1903. Study in the fields of anthropology, classics, history, languages, literature, philosophy and politics transforms students' lives, giving them the confidence to participate fully in their wider community and make a lasting difference. We have built a reputation for national research excellence across the Arts and our teachers are renowned for their innovation and commitment to the sharing of knowledge.

Since 2014, 8 exceptional and deserving students have received the scholarship to help them continue their studies at Melbourne.

Moving forward we would like to be able to give out 5 scholarships per year worth $10,000 each. This amount would make an enormous difference to the lives of the students in need.

The 110 Scholarship is a permanently endowed trust within the University which means that by making a gift to the scholarship fund you would be contributing not only to next year’s recipients but also to generations of students to come. Your gift, however large or small, becomes a permanent commitment to the support of students within the Faculty of Arts. Initially we are aiming to build this endowment to $1million, which would enable us to award 5 x $10,000 scholarships every year.

We see this fund as an ever-growing opportunity to support our Arts students with their studies far into the future so this $1million target is just the beginning. Our ultimate aim is to award 10 x $10,000 scholarships per year: 5 to commencing first-year students, and five to those who experience difficulty during their degree.

We would be delighted if you would join us by becoming part of the 110.
