To what extent does China’s long cultural history, the unique political systems in operation in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and the economic transformation of the region that has taken place in recent decades make the greater China region exceptional in itself and in relation to others? How is art made by artists residing in greater China understood when it is exhibited outside its locus of production?

Charles Green is Professor of Contemporary Art in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. Author of Peripheral Vision (Craftsman House, 1996) and The Third Hand (U Minnesota Press, 2001), he recently published a history of biennials in contemporary art, *Biennials, Triennials and Documenta: The Exhibitions that Created Contemporary Art* (Wiley Blackwell, 2016), with Associate Professor Anthony Gardner (Oxford University), assisted by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant. Lyndell Brown and Charles Green have worked in collaboration as one artist since 1989. They are based in regional Victoria. Their works are included in most of Australia's public art museum collections and many private and corporate collections. In 2007, they were Australia's Official War Artists, deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, and between 2011 and 2014 worked on a followup collaboration with artist Jon Cattapan (assisted by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant) about the aftermath of Australia's wars since Vietnam, which the three artists exhibited in Melbourne across two galleries in late 2014, accompanied by a book (*Framing Conflict: Contemporary War and Aftermath, Macmillan Palgrave, 2014*). He is also a wellknown artist working always in collaboration with Lyndell Brown since 1989. His research has been supported by a stream of ARC (3 DPs), Australia Council (5 grants) and other grants and fellowships. He has published 4 widelypraised books, edited 6 books, published 36 book chapters, 18 journal articles and more than 200 essays and reviews in professional journals worldwide, including the world's leading art journal, Artforum. He has coedited Australia's peak art history journal. As an artist he has held 40 solo exhibitions and has been included in 45 curated exhibitions at many of Australia's leading public art museums. In 2007 with Lyndell Brown they were Australia's Official War Artists, deployed in warzones in Afghanistan and Iraq. Professor Green has undergraduate degrees and postgraduate research degrees in both art history and art practice, including a PhD in art history and a Masters in studio art practice. He has extensive experience in research collaborations in both art history and art practice. In addition, he has expertise as a curator of contemporary art (through a fiveyear, 20012006 appointment as Adjunct Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, and has researched and published in the emerging area of contemporary art curatorship with the assistance of an ARC Discovery grant. He has become an expert on war art through his experience as a war artist in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has served on national arts organization committees, most the recently Commissioner's Council for Australia at the Biennale of Venice (2011 onwards, and between 201315 as Deputy Commissioner).

Dr Claire Roberts is an historian of Chinese art and a curator. She is Associate Professor, Art History and ARC Future Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. She has published widely on Chinese art and visual and material culture, and curated numerous exhibitions. Claire is fluent in Mandarin and began her studies in Chinese at secondary school in Melbourne. She later studied at Beijing Languages Institute (197879) and the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing (197981). She has a Bachelor of Arts, Combined Hons. (1983) and a Master of Arts (1987) from the University of Melbourne. She was Curator at the Museum of ChineseAustralian History, Melbourne (198688) and Senior Curator of Asian Arts at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney (19882010). Claire's PhD undertaken in the Research School of Pacific and Asian History at ANU (2006), focussed on the work of scholar and brushandink painter Huang Binhong (18651955). After completing her PhD she was a Postdoctoral Fellow with Geremie R Barmé's ARC Federation Fellowship (20079); Research Fellow, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University (200910); Coordinate Program Fellow, HarvardYenching Institute (2011); Senior Lecturer in Art History, University of Adelaide (20122014). Her current ARC Future Fellowship project focuses on the international context of modern and contemporary Chinese art.
Tina Pang, Curator
Hong Kong Visual Culture at M+, West Kowloon Cultural District
Tina Pang is Curator, Hong Kong Visual Culture at M+, part of the West Kowloon Cultural District. Prior to joining M+ she was curator at the University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, and honorary assistant professor in the Department of Fine Arts where she taught museum studies and Chinese material culture. She was a 2010 recipient of the Lee Hysan Foundation Fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council to research curatorial practices in the United States. Recent curatorial projects have included the M+ Pavilion exhibition, *Ambiguously Yours: Gender in Hong Kong popular culture* (2017). Tina is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (BA Hons Chinese and Art & Archaeology), and St. Hilda’s College, The University of Oxford, (MPhil Ethnology and Museum Ethnography).

Carol Yinghua Lu is an art critic and curator. She is currently PhD scholar, the University of Melbourne and is advising director to the Beijing InsideOut Art Museum. She is a contributing editor at Frieze and is on the advisory board of The Exhibitionist. Lu was on the jury for the Golden Lion Award at the 2011 Venice Biennale and on the jury for the Filipino National Pavilion of 2018 Venice Biennale of Architecture. She was the coartistic director of the 2012 Gwangju Biennale and cocurator of the 7th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale in 2012. From 2012 to 2015, she was the artistic director and chief curator of OCAT Shenzhen. She was the first visiting fellow in the AsiaPacific Fellowship program at the Tate Research Centre in 2013. She was one of the first four ARIAH (Association of Research Institute in Art History) East Asia Fellows 2017 at Bard Graduate Center. She was a researcher on the exhibition history in China for the Asian Cultural Complex in Gwangju and a cocurator of *Discordant Harmony*, a touring exhibition on the potential, challenges and impossibilities of imagining Asia.

Suhsing Lin received her B.A. degree in History from Tunghai University, Taiwan, and earned her MA and PhD in Chinese Art History from The Ohio State University. She was Assistant Professor in Visual Communication Design at Shute University, Kaohsiung (20042009) before joining the Department of Art History at Tainan National University of the Arts. Her research focuses on graphic design in modern Chinese art, visual culture in Shanghai and its interactions with Japan and the West in the twentieth century, and Taiwanese art.
