On May 17th, 1990, the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organisation approved the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD10), which no longer listed homosexuality as a diagnosis.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) launched in 2004 to celebrate LGBTI+ globally. On May 17th this year, people from all over Australia and the world will stand against discrimination in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTI+) colleagues and families with the central theme of “Solidarity and Alliance”.

The IDAHOBIT Working Group made up of staff, University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) and Graduate Student Association (GSA) students have collaborated to deliver the following event which all staff and students are encouraged to attend.

Live art (paint or drawing) on canvas: We will encourage all staff and students to sign the canvas in an expression of solidarity to our LGBTI+ community

Stand in Solidarity Photo: On the half hour (12:30pm, 1:00pm, 1:30pm, 2:00pm and 2:30pm) an aerial photo will be taken of everyone present at the event venue “standing in solidarity” with the canvas at the centre.

You may also wish to contribute and show your solidarity by wearing a splash of rainbow on the day or by hanging one of the attached posters to your office door or staff common areas.
