Senate rejects changes to current Citizenship legislation

Vigorous community activism including representations made by the Language Testing Research Centre, the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia and many other agencies to the recent Senate Committee Hearing have resulted in rejection by the Senate of Peter Dutton’s proposed changes to current Citizenship legislation.

The LTRC’s submission raised objections to the introduction of an unduly stringent English language testing requirement, which was seen as unnecessary and unfair in the sense that it disadvantaged already vulnerable immigrants within limited access to formal education.
