Laura works with the UoM Initiative for Peacebuilding supporting the implementation of the Bougainville Senior Leadership Professional Development Programme 2023-2024.
Laura Raicu is a peacebuilding practitioner with experience supporting local peacebuilding initiatives in Papua New Guinea, in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and Hela Province. Prior to working in PNG, Laura contributed to enhancing settlement outcomes for immigrant and refugee communities in Australia through research, analysis and programme and policy development.
Between 2021-2024 Laura led a peacebuilding pilot project and research and analysis of peace and conflict drivers in Hela Province in the Highlands of PNG. Her work included an assessment of the effects of violence on communities, identification of peacebuilding capacities and recommendations for strengthening pathways towards peace. Laura also led the delivery of a peacebuilding training programme for community leaders to strengthen their conflict sensitive leadership skills and role they can play in preventing violence.
In Bougainville Laura led a peacebuilding programme seeking to address the lasting effects of the Bougainville conflict and prevent violence from reemerging. Examples of her work include conducting research and peacebuilding analysis, facilitating dialogue spaces, supporting the transition to peace work for former Bougainville combatants, providing advice and comparative learning inputs and developing initiatives to strengthen community conflict resolution mechanisms.
