Wadeye languages new and old
Wadeye is a place with many Aboriginal languages, like Murrinhpatha, Magati Ke, Marri Ngarr, Marri Tjevin, Marri Amu and Jaminjung. In the old days of the mission, people spoke all these languages. But now the new generation speak mostly just Murrinhpatha, and English. People in the nearby town of Palumpa speak Murrinh Kura, which is like Murrinhpatha but with a few differences. There are also some difference between the yitthit (heavy) language of old people, and the parnturtparn (light) language of young people. Wadeye has many different clans, but they now all share one language, Murrinhpatha.
