April 2016: visitors from Warruwi (NT)

Building on their 2015 experience, in April 2016 Janet Marbinda and Rachel Meiyinbara, Indigenous scholars from Warruwi, visited the University of Melbourne to work with Research Unit for Indigenous Language team member Ruth Singer.

This gave Janet and Rachel the chance to expand on their language documentation skills developed since their 2015 visit, as well as increasing Janet's capacity as a research assistant on Ruth Singer's Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) project looking at multilingualism and language use at Warruwi Community.

This visit also created the opportunity to include two more younger Warruwi community members in the creation of recordings as part of Ruth's project Young people's language use at Warruwi Community: Mawng-Kunwinjku bilinguals. Two younger relatives of Janet Marbinda were based at St Leonard's College (Brighton, Victoria) during this time, and this visit facilitated the participation of these students in the project, as well as fostering development of the relationship between Ruth’s project and the school.
