Using geographic information in a HASS virtual lab: Geocoding requirements

Researchers in the humanities are increasingly adopting new technologies and engaging with a variety of digital resources and services. With the increasing availability of both historic and real-time data, there is an increasing opportunity for researchers to harness the power of geographic information (GI) to support exploration, analysis and presentation tasks. The goal of this 2 hour interactive workshop is to principally understand how HASS researchers using GI can be supported with geocoding tools. It will commence with an introduction to GI, followed by a look at epistemological and teleological perspectives. Next, example HASS projects that have innovated using geocoding and GI will be discussed, together with a review of the current techniques and tools that are supporting (or challenging) researchers. It is planned that output from this session will work towards understanding user requirements and inform the design of a national survey into how geocoding and GI can be used in a HASS Virtual Laboratory leveraging AURIN.

Researchers with direct experience using geographic information and geocoding tools are encouraged to attend.
