Data and Democracies: Developing Data Capacity in the Victorian Government

Public sector leaders know that modern analytics and data-driven technologies lead to better decisions and outcomes. As governments embrace the potential twenty-first century data-driven decision making, they face challenges such as integrating new technology systems, modernising their workforce, and building public trust. The Victorian Centre for Data Insights exists to transform the way the Victorian Government uses data to deliver better policies and services. This presentation discussed the challenges and opportunities that governments face in this increasingly important space.

Brad Petry is Head of Data Analytics at the Victorian Centre for Data Insights at Department of Premier and Cabinet. In this role, Brad is responsible for leading the development and delivery of innovative cross government data science and analytics projects and solutions to support Government decision making and drive public sector reform. Brad has also held leadership positions in data and analytics in both Federal and State Government, most recently at the Victorian Department of Justice and Regulation where he established the Crime Statistics Agency to independently report public crime statistics for Victoria.
