  • Eligibility & selection criteria

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    • Have completed a PhD in the SHAPS History program after 1 June 2021.

    Full-time academic employees are ineligible.

    Once awarded, the timing of the Gilbert Postdoctoral Career Development Fellowships will be negotiated between the recipient and the committee.

    Selection criteria

    The fellowship will be offered to the applicant who demonstrates:

    • the quality and feasibility of the submitted plan;
    • academic merit; and,
    • the skills, experience and aptitude required to carry out the proposed project as evidenced by the application.
  • Application process

    Complete the online application form including:

    • The proposed research topic/title;
    • an overview of your writing project, including intended publication outlets;
    • an indication of when you intend to apply for an ARC DECRA;
    • at least one academic reference;
    • your PhD examiners report; and,
    • a CV (including publications to date).

  • When will I know the outcome?

    Applicants will be advised of the outcome via email within 8 to 10 weeks after the closing date.

    Gilbert Postdoctoral Career Development Fellowships

    These fellowship are supported by donations made from the Gilbert Bequest and the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies.

What are the benefits?

The successful applicant will be awarded a single payment of $2,000.

The fellowship is to enhance the recipient’s research track record by supporting the development of their PhD research so that it is suitable for publication as a journal article, book chapter or book and encourage future applications for ARC DECRA Awards for postdoctoral research.

Recipients are required to:

  • accept award online within 21 days;
  • Submit a one-page report on their progress in developing their research and intended DECRA application at the end of the mentoring period.
