The Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship is funded by the Australian Government and enables students to undertake a graduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience with leading Australian researchers.
The Faculty usually awards around 35 scholarships.
Graduate Research Scholarships (Research Training Program Scholarships and Melbourne Research Scholarships) are awarded on the basis of academic merit, strategic alignment and supervisor availability. Eligible applicants are scored and ranked according to their academic achievement in their last completed degree/s, their research potential in their field of study, and other factors relevant to the proposed research, such as professional experience, refereed publications, or published creative work.
Strategic alignment includes factors such as fit with supervisor research and expertise, as well as the relationship of the proposed topic to School priority areas (indicative research priorities can be seen at the relevant School website). A small proportion of Graduate Research Scholarships are retained to support the development of specific strategic research initiatives, related to projects or areas of inquiry given priority by the Faculty or Schools.
Additionally, some preference may be given to:
- Applicants who are graduates of overseas institutions that represent a previously nominated strategic priority for the School and/or Faculty
- Indigenous applicants
- Applicants to existing research concentrations
- Applicants who are early career academic staff employed in universities with which the Faculty has partnerships, particularly in China, India and Indonesia
Applicants who have either already held an equivalent scholarship (RTP, APA or MRS) or who have completed a degree at the same or higher level than that applied for may receive lower preference in scholarship selection.

The Faculty of Arts application deadline is 31 October each year. There is no midyear intake for Graduate Research courses in Arts, therefore there is no midyear application round.
The Faculty of Arts may still consider scholarship applications received after 31 October, however applicants will only be eligible for any remaining scholarships.
