Prosodic typology: Word-level, phrase-level and connection to morpho-syntax

Prosodic cartoon image

Research on prosodic typology has expanded notably in the last few decades. While first concentrating on the word level, it is now increasingly also considering possible classifications of phrase-level prosody. In this talk, I will illustrate Féry's phrase-level classification into intonation languages, tone languages and phrase languages with data from languages such as Mandarin, English, Kalaallisut, Inuktitut and Finnish, as well as discuss how it relates to word-level prosody. I will also discuss some cross-linguistic connections between prosodic and morpho-syntactic typology, particularly concentrating on the interplay between prosodic and morpho-syntactic flexibility and their interaction in focus marking.
