Policy Divergence in Inward Foreign Investment Screening Mechanisms
My research investigates the causes of policy variation in investment screening mechanisms (ISMs). ISMs are policies through which governments regulate cross-border mergers and acquisitions. ISM design tends to vary between countries and over time. My research develops a methodology to measure this variation and proposes a theoretical framework to explain the cross-national variation in ISMs. The framework links changes in ISM policy design to industrial policy reforms and the underlying capital accumulation preferences. My thesis includes comparative case studies of ISMs in China, India and South Korea.
