German Studies at the University of Melbourne and Monash University Present - Kleine Momente im Grossen Krieg (Small Moments in the Great War)

To commemorate the centenary of WWI armistice, University of Melbourne German studies undergraduate and postgraduate students, guided by program staff, have produced an evening of theatre and music inspired by German experiences of the Great War. The evening will present a range of shorter performances including drama, memoir, poetry, prose autobiographical writing and song. Excerpts from well-known pieces such as Karl Kraus’ satire The Last Days of Mankind and Erich Maria Remarque’s, All Quiet on the Western Front will be performed alongside carefully selected autobiographical accounts including soldiers’ letters and trench journals, letters from the German home front and letters and camp journals written by German and Austrian internees in Australian internment camps. The intention is to give a snapshot of war experience from a diversity of German-language perspectives, including that of the Australian German community. To showcase the wealth of musical talent among German students, the evening will also feature music and song of the time. Subtitles or synopses in English will be provided to ensure the performance is accessible to non-German speakers.
(The performance is in both English and German). Note: To purchase tickets please hover the mouse over tickets in the attached pdf flyer.
