Witnessing and the Renegotiation of Traumatic Memory in Contemporary Italian Literature

This thesis draws on the concept of witnessing to explore the renegotiation of traumatic memory in a representative corpus of trauma novels. These novels narrate intergenerational traumas caused by Italian colonisation, dictatorship and civil war in Somalia and Ethiopia. By investigating witnessing in the contexts of writing and reading, this thesis illuminates the strategies employed by authors to represent and share trauma with Italian readers.
