Frances Egan's PhD completion seminar: Portraits of the Artist's Self: Translating Alexandre Vialatte's,"Battling le ténébreux".

You are warmly welcomed to join Francis Egan at her PhD completion seminar: Portraits of the Artist's Self: Translating Alexandre Vialatte's, "Battling le ténébreux".

Through a case study of writer-translator Alexandre Vialatte’s 1928 novel, "Battling le ténébreux", and the eponymous Battling’s allegorical (anti) coming-of-age, this thesis investigates identity ‘in translation’. It aligns the modernist hero’s ontological quest with the textual task of translating Battling into English: as French protagonist seeks himself in the foreign and feminine Other, finding insecurity, translator meets writer and problematises the original. This thesis suggests translation is our mode of connection with alterity and the unresolved encounter is identity itself.
