French Studies

One of the first subjects taught at the University of Melbourne, our French program offers world-class research and teaching in French language and literature studies.

Old Arts Quadrangle

French was first taught at the University of Melbourne in the early 1880s and the program became a world-renowned centre for research on French literature under Professor A.R. Chisholm’s leadership from 1921-1956.

Today, our academic staff are leaders in a much wider range of research areas, including cultural representations in French cinema, translation in medieval and Renaissance texts, immigration and identity in Francophone Asia and the Pacific, colonialism and its aftermath in travel writing and gastronomy.

Many of our graduates have risen to positions of responsibility in diverse sectors of society: in the arts, education, publishing, the law, business, politics, government and diplomacy.

Connect with our community partners

We work consistently to promote the value of French studies in the wider community through our links with schools and organisations like the Alliance Française de Melbourne, the Association of French Teachers of Victoria the French Embassy and Consulate, SBS French Radio, the Melbourne Salon, the French Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and many more.

Melbourne’s great cultural institutions call on our expertise to participate in French exhibitions and performances – like “Les Misérables” at the State Library of Victoria, the French Impressionists at the National Gallery of Victoria, and the annual French Film Festival. We leverage these connections to expose students to a wider range of work integrated learning experiences.

We also founded Australia’s longest-running French theatre company in 1977 – the Melbourne French Theatre Inc – and the Institute for the Study of French-Australian Relations in 1985.
