Searching for signals of Dark Matter plus top quark pairs with the ATLAS detector

One of the still unanswered questions in modern physics is the precise nature of Dark Matter. While we know of its existence, and have a general idea of the properties it must have in order to explain the observed gravitational interactions in the universe along with how the universe today has formed, evidence of the specific nature of Dark Matter still eludes us. One strategy employed in collider physics experiments and analyses, is to make a minimal assumption of new particles and coupling to Standard Model particles, and search for its production in particle colliders in order to explore the range of possibilities without being constrained by specific models. For this talk we will focus on the case where the assumption is made that Dark Matter couples strongly to the heavier quarks, which motivates searching for processes where it is produced in association with pairs of top quarks. This talk will present analyses performed on the 2015 and 2016 Run 2 dataset taken with the ATLAS detector, looking at the fully hadronic version of this final state in an attempt to either confirm or constrain these specific models, and then apply the results to more specific and complete models that also result in the same final states.
