Thesis
A Study of Stancetaking in the Discourse about the #MeToo Movement in Pakistan
This thesis investigates stancetaking in the discourse surrounding the #MeToo movement in Pakistan, focusing on the accusations made by Pakistani female singer against her male co-singer. By analysing Twitter data and conducting interviews, the study explores the types of stances individuals take, the framing of sexual harassment, and the socio-cultural and moral values invoked through social media. Utilising Du Bois' theory of stancetaking, the research employs the Appraisal framework and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to analyse social actors' engagement in sexual harassment discourse within the patriarchal context of Pakistani society.
