Syme is a PhD Candidate at the University of Melbourne's Asia Institute. Her thesis focuses on better understanding human rights discourses in the Philippines under former Rodrigo Duterte's Presidency. Prior to her PhD, she worked for the Human Rights Defender Programme at the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA). She also holds a MSc in Human Rights from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences and a BSc in International Studies from the University of Queensland.
