About the conference
This conference seeks to bring together scholars, policy makers, and experts from diverse fields to exchange and share their experiences and research findings, with a particular emphasis on grounding Global China. What we mean by this is understanding the on-ground dynamics of Global China in specific places and making space for complex relations and a multiplicity of actors.

CCCS Conference 2024: Grounding Global China
China’s presence is now felt in almost every aspect of the planet. From its commodities and culture to its population and politics, “Global China” is increasingly reshaping our world.
This conference will be held by the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies (CCCS), which plays a vital role in shaping an Australian approach to the study of contemporary China and serves as a significant source of research-based information on China, Chinese societies and Chinese economies in the 21st century.
Proudly sponsored by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne, the 2024 CCCS Conference will provide a welcoming and engaging platform for scholars to share, discuss, and debate the dynamics of “Global China”. We particularly welcome PhD students and early career academics to join the discussion.
We invite original papers on “Global China” broadly defined, as well as other issues related to China, including but not limited to:
- Belt and Road Initiative local-level impacts
- The making of Chinese expertise
- Global China and extractive industries
- Telling Global China stories
- Ecological civilisation goes global
- South-South development cooperation

Submit your abstract
We invite scholars who are interested in participating in the conference to submit a proposed title, abstract (up to 200 words), and brief biography on or before 30 June 2024. We will let you know the outcome of your submission by 30 July 2024.

If you require a visa, the University is advising conference presenters obtain visa 408. This is not a sponsored visa, and you can apply for it independently. To receive the invitation letter for this visa, you must 1) purchase your conference ticket and 2) send your CV to china-centre@unimelb.edu.au.

The weather in Melbourne in December is generally warm and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 12°C to 25°C. Do note that Melbourne is known for its weather variability. It is common to experience a mix of sunny, rainy, and windy days in December, and temperatures can drop significantly in the early mornings and evenings. The UV index during this month can reach very high levels, so it's important to wear protective clothing and sunscreen when spending time outdoors.
