We need your War Memorial
Help us assess and care for Victoria’s military monuments
The University of Melbourne is developing a FREE project to assess and better care for our War Memorials and we need your help.
Our aim
War memorials are found in cities, suburbs and towns across Victoria. Some are prominent and well maintained, while others are less visible and increasingly at risk.
The University of Melbourne is launching a conservation-led project to understand the condition and preservation needs of War Memorials across the state, focusing on memorials in suburban and regional areas that are not heritage listed.
Why it matters
War memorials are important places of remembrance and reflection. They are focal points for community gatherings and provide a powerful connection to history and place.
Without a clear picture of their condition and needs, many memorials face gradual (and sometimes irreversible) deterioration, putting their long-term future at risk.
The project
The project will be carried out by University conservators in several phases, including:
- Online survey
- Onsite condition assessment of memorials (if selected)
- Analysis and reporting
Benefits to you
As a participant you will receive:
- A professional condition report and photographic record of each memorial that is inspected
- Conservation Management Plan with prioritised treatment recommendations
- Access to a project report, aggregating statewide findings (anonymised) These are invaluable resources for planning and prioritising maintenance and conservation works and will add weight to your next funding or grant application.
What we need
This project is in its early stages and its success depends on your support. So, if you are a custodian of a War Memorial, or if you know someone in your organisation who is, we invite you to register your interest.
