How it works

Depending on the work you have available, our team will align your opportunity with the right student(s), offering flexibility to your needs.

Internship

An internship is the most common form of experience our students undertake offering them the opportunity to gain valuable workplace insight whilst gaining course credit. The hour requirements vary from 80-100 for undergraduate and up to 200 hours at the graduate level.

Offer an Internship: Expression of Interest

Register your interest: Complete an enquiry form with details of your proposed internship and a member of the team will reach out to discuss and offer guidance on next steps.
Approval process: Our academic staff will review the details to ensure the opportunity aligns with the University's requirements and will provide a valuable learning opportunity for our students.
Advertising and promotion: Once approved, our team will circulate your opportunity to the right student cohort(s) to gain interest.
Student selection: Students will apply to your internship offering directly and you are encouraged to screen, shortlist, and interview candidate(s) through your standard recruitment process.
Sign paperwork: We have a standard university agreement for all approved and course-credited internships which will require your signing. This can be provided in advance to refer to your obligations as a Host Organisation and The University's obligations.
Internship commencement: Once you've confirmed your intern(s) and the paperwork has been signed, student(s) can commence their internship. A 'Guide to Hosting Interns' will also be provided to assist with your role as an internship supervisor.

Industry project

A popular alternative to an internship is an industry project which sees a small team of students work on a project for your organisation. If you would like to offer an industry project, please complete the below form.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay the student?
Where a student is undertaking an internship opportunity for course credit which is approved by the University, it can be lawfully unpaid under the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth). Whilst there is no expectation of student reimbursement, in some circumstances organisations choose to pay a stipend to cover students’ expenses. Organisations which are interested in offering a stipend or allowance to students on placement are encouraged to contact the Faculty to discuss arrangements.
When can I host a student?
As internships and projects are undertaken as part of a subject there are specific periods in which these subjects run. However, we encourage you to contact the team to explore your options.
Insurance
Students who take part in an approved placement will be covered by the University’s insurance for the duration of that placement. This includes Public liability, Professional Indemnity, and Personal Accident coverage. Host organisations can receive copies of the certificate of currencies upon request. In addition to the University’s insurance policies, the University requires a host organisation to take out and maintain Public Liability insurance cover.
