50 words in Djukun - A language of the West Kimberley

Congratulations to Jaala Ozies, a proud Djukun woman, for the publication of her children’s book '50 Words in Djukun - A language of the West Kimberley'. This book is the result of dedicated language revitalization work by Jaala, supported by Djukun elders, and was inspired by RUIL’s 50 Words project.

Jaala visited RUIL in 2024 to learn about the project and has contributed the recordings to our 50 Words website – you can listen here. The book is a beautiful production that forges a significant step in re-awakening the Djukun language. Jaala hopes the book will form the basis for language lessons for children in the community and might also inspire other language groups to publish their 50 words as well.

The book will be launched in Broome on December 23rd – click here for more details. All welcome!
