Readers in Vietnamese
Vietnamese is a tonal Austroasiatic language and the national and official language of Vietnam. Our readers were translated into Vietnamese by Trang Nguyen.
Vietnamese is spoken by about 85 million people as a first language and several million as a second or third language, both in Vietnam and overseas. According to the 2021 census, 320,758 people in Australia speak Vietnamese at home, which makes it the third most spoken language other than English.
Vietnamese is conventionally grouped into three main variants: Northern, Central and Southern Vietnamese. Where there are differences between the variants, we use the Southern Vietnamese variant in our readers.
