SheShaka: addressing gendered and cultural barriers to participation in surfing

In the evening of Wednesday 29th November 2023 the opening of the SheShaka exhibition was celebrated with speeches, wine, cheese and nibbles, and good vibes, as guests took in the manifest marvels of women's expression of their relationships to surfing, joyous and tumultuous, their rhythms, resilience and responses to gender inequality and barriers in their surfing experiences.
The exhibition is comprised of several prints stationed on easels with different women's pictures and surfing stories, a digital slideshow of pictures, a documentary screening and interview in the immersive room, and a visitor book for comments.
The exhibition was the work of the wonderful participants in the SheShaka: addressing gendered and cultural barriers to participation in surfing project, Gemma Tarpey-Brown, Research Assistant, and Associate Professor Karen Block, from the Gender and Women's Health Unit, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health.
An additional event was held on Saturday 2nd December, which very specially had the participants of the artwork and stories come to view and speak to their involvement in the SheShaka project.
