Building on his extensive experience developing mixed reality experiences for artists and museums in Australia, the United States, and Europe, Professor Keir Winesmith will explore the potential and pitfalls when museums attempt to make public facing experiences using these technologies. Citing his own practice and other sector leading successes and failures he will set out the institutional context, experience models, and development strategies that can lead to projects that engage audiences.
This seminar is part of the Digital Studio’s 2020 Seminar Series – Seeing Double: The Multiple Worlds of Virtual Reality which is presented in partnership with the Enlightenment, Romanticism Contemporary Culture research unit.
Professor Keir Winesmith has been working at the intersection of culture and technology for the last 20 years. Over that time, he has developed a series of award-winning immersive art and technology projects in Australia, U.S., U.K. and Germany, including stints as the director of digital departments at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. In 2018 he was named in Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business for his work in this area. Keir currently wears many hats, including Professor of Practice at UNSW Art & Design, with research interests in cultural data at scale, technologies role in the future of design and art education, and how AI impacts culture and creativity. Keir’s new book, co-authored with Dr Suse Anderson, The Digital Future of Museums explores technology’s role in shaping the future of the museum sector.
