The Jessie Webb Scholarship supports graduate research students enrolled in the Classics and Archaeology program in the Faculty of Arts, undertaking a course of study at the British School at Athens or another similar school in Greece.

Benefits

Up to $26,000 is available and several awards may be offered from this amount. Award payments will be made as a single lump-sum.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

• be enrolled in a graduate research degree within the Classics and Archaeology program in the Faculty of Arts; and,
• be planning overseas travel to Greece to undertake research.

Selection criteria

The scholarships will be awarded to the applicants who make the most compelling case for support by demonstrating:

• the relevance of the overseas placement to their intended research;
• the quality and feasibility of the proposed program of study in Greece;
• academic merit; and,
• the skills, experience and aptitude required to carry out the proposed project as evidenced by the application.

Conditions

Recipients are required to:

• accept the award online within 21 days;
• submit the relevant travel documents;
• travel to Greece and attend either the British School at Athens or any other similar school to undertake study; and,
• submit a report within two months of returning from travel.

Outcome

Applicants are advised of the outcome via email within 8-10 weeks.

Application process

Eligible applicants must complete the online application form, including:

• details of your proposed program of study overseas;
• a summary of your proposed program of study in Ancient History or Classical Studies in Greece;
• evidence of initial contact or approval of residency at the British School at Athens or similar school in Greece;
• a 300-500 word statement outlining how the scholarship would positively impact your life and assist with your studies, and how pursuing study and research overseas is important to your academic work;
• an indicative budget;
• at least one academic reference;
• a current statement of results; and,
• any other information to support your application that may assist the committee in making its decision.

About the donors

Jessie Webb (1880-1944) completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1902 and a Master of Arts in 1904. She joined the History Department in 1908 and was promoted to the position of senior lecturer in 1923 and acting professor on several occasions (1925, 1933-34 and 1942-44). Jessie remained in the History program for the rest of her life and developed a renowned reputation for her teaching, which was mainly in the area of ancient history, especially Greek history. She died while an acting professor in 1944. The History Department library is named in her honour; Jessie left a gift in her will to support a student to travel to Greece and undertake a course of study at the British School of Archaeology at Athens or any other similar school.

The Jessie Webb scholarship made my visit to Greece and access to the British School at Athens (BSA) possible. Making professional connections with scholars at BSA, and examining museum objects and archaeological sites, enhanced my research understandings leading to new avenues of investigation in my PhD project and created links for future collaborative research projects.
