WHAT'S IN A NAME? - FROM PRESENTING TO CURATING DANCE

This doctoral research examines the mechanisms and dynamics at play in the programming/presenting of contemporary dance. The study does so by focusing on the figure of dance presenters/programmers. It analyses their professional practices and behaviours as well as the implications these may have in shaping the audience’s taste, the artists’ careers and the broader dance ecology. The research hopes to clearly identify and scholarly interrogate these specific knowledges and processes relating to the public visibility of the dance artists and of their works. Using an international approach and bringing the researcher’s own 20-year professional practice in dialogue with leading voices of the field, the study hopes to define what presenting dance may entail, curatorially, culturally and politically.
